The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is inviting applications for the 2024 Academy of Excellence Internships x8 posts.

Closing date: 12 July 2024

Duration of Internship: The internship will be for a duration 6 months.

CSIR is a leading scientific and technology research organisation that researches, develops, localises and diffuses technologies to accelerate socio-economic prosperity in South Africa. The organisation’s work contributes to industrial development and supports a capable state.

About the Internships

The CSIR has a vacancy for Internships: Software Development, Data Science, and Cybersecurity. The interns will be responsible for undertaking research and development, secure software development, data analytics, and cybersecurity technical activities across different strategic projects.

These positions are mostly based in Pretoria with limited options for remote work.

Internship Areas

Interns will be exposed to all of the following areas:

  • Secure software development
  • Data science
  • Cybersecurity

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend technical and on-the-job training as required across the internship areas
  • Perform research to solve the open research problem(s) as identified in different research and technical projects within the internship areas.

  • Contribute towards software development, and data analytics and cybersecurity engineering in selected projects as per the internship areas.
  • Complete technical project activities as assigned across the internship development areas.
  • Present projects to the clients and/or relevant stakeholders

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • A National Diploma (NQF 6), or a BSc Degree (NQF 7) and/or Honours degree (NQF 8) in computer engineering, computer science, information technology, information systems or a related/relevant field.
  • Must have a good background in computer systems, data science, information security, cybersecurity and/or software development.

  • Excellent and practical knowledge of related programming languages such as Python, R, Java, C# and the Linux operating system (and others applicable).
  • Knowledge and exposure in software development for experimentation and prototyping.
  • Ability to work with different types of data sets and good grasp of analytical tools.

  • Good understanding of cybersecurity concepts and protocols
  • Good communication skills (verbal and written) and ability to interact efficiently with diverse teams of people; and discipline to work individually.
  • Good time management skills, problem solving as well as critical thinking
