The SARAO is a facility of the National Research Foundation, and is responsible for managing all radio astronomy initiatives and facilities in South Africa.

About the Graduate-in-Training Programme

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory is recruiting bright and enthusiastic Engineering and Science-Honours graduates for its Graduate-In-Training programme.

The SARAO Graduate In-Training Programme is designed to provide recent graduates with practical experience in their fields of study, particularly in the context of radio astronomy and related disciplines.

Graduates in this program may work on various aspects of radio astronomy, including engineering, data science, software development, and project management.

They gain valuable skills and experience that can help them advance their careers in the industry or academia.

Eligibility

South African citizens who completed or are in the final year of studies in:

  • BEng / BSc Eng Electronics / Electrical / Mechatronic / Computer Engineering / Radio Frequency / Embedded Systems / Power Systems
  • BSc (Hons) Computer Science / Applied Mathematics / Physics / Astronomy / Astrophysics
  • BEng / BSc Eng Mechanical Engineering
  • BEng / BSc Eng Computer Science
  • BEng / Bsc Eng Construction Management / Quantity Surveying / Draughting / Civil Engineering
  • BSc (Hons) Information Technology
  • BEng Industrial Engineering

Successful graduates will be placed in SARAO Cape Town and Hartebeesthoek (HartRAO) Offices for a period of 3 years, commencing in January 2025.

SARAO will offer financial assistance to successful graduates who register for a Masters degree (part-time), at a South African university while in the graduate programme.
