The Association for Rural Advancement (AFRA) is recruiting for the Project Internship 2024/ 2025.

Closing Date: 13 September 2024

Location: The incumbent will report to the Project Facilitator for Msinga and will be based in Tugela Ferry, Pietermaritzburg.

Stipend: The intern will receive a stipend of R8000 per month for the duration of the 6-month internship.

Job Purpose

The ideal candidate should have a deep interest in agricultural development and a commitment to reducing social inequality.

The intern would be based with the Farmer Support Group.

About the AFRA

AFRA is a land rights advocacy non-governmental organisation (NGO) working since 1979 to support marginalised black rural people, with a focus on farm dwellers. 

The AFRA is based in Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu Natal, and is the lead partner of a consortium of civil society organisations currently implementing the EU co-funded Innovative Partnerships for Change: Raising new climate change initiatives and champions project.

As part of this project, AFRA is recruiting an intern to work in this project.

AFRA is therefore seeking an enthusiastic and dynamic intern for a period of six months starting October 2024.

Duties of the Project Intern

The successful applicant will be responsible for facilitating community engagement with rural communities in the Msinga Local Municipality.

S/he will be responsible for facilitating regular project meetings and sessions with target community members in the project to impart relevant skills.

In addition, s/he should communicate and organize meetings with various stakeholders.

The applicant is expected to drive to sites, the field or to communities and must be able to drive a manual transmission vehicle.

S/he should have technical knowledge on crop production and sustainable agricultural practices and be fluent in IsiZulu.

Minimum Requirements

  • Matric
  • Four-year relevant Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Extension, Agriculture or related field.
  • Valid driver license for manual vehicles
  • Experience in word-processing and spreadsheets.

Advantage: An understanding of smallholder farmers’ climate change adaptation and mitigation.
