Newsperson (South Africa Reporter)

  • Location: Johannesburg, ZA

Responsibilities: In this role, you will primarily be a fast-paced text reporter and writer, and you’ll be expected to help guide, edit and elevate the work of other AP journalists and freelancers contributing to our text report.

You will work closely with AP beat teams around the world – including with the Climate and Environment, Health and Science, Migration and Religion desks – to tell vibrant stories on a broad range of topics including health, development, arts, business, lifestyle and equality.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as at least one year of full-time work at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet or AP bureau.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a regional language is a plus.
  • All applicants must be able to work in South Africa or be able to gain permission to do so.

Videojournalist (South Africa Videojournalist)

  • Location: Johannesburg, ZA
  • Company: Associated Press

Responsibilities: Reporting to the senior producer for Southern Africa, you will primarily shoot, write and edit video – including LIVE video – stories from South Africa for AP’s broadcast, digital and mobile customers and platforms. In this role, you will also pitch, develop and research enterprise stories.

You may contribute reporting in other media formats, including text, photos and audio, to help produce a competitive and comprehensive all-formats news report.

You must be prepared to travel extensively, including outside of South Africa – often at short notice and in hostile environments – to cover breaking news.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as three years of full-time news experience as a video journalist at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.
  • All applicants must be able to work in South Africa or be able to gain permission to do so.

  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in other regional languages is a plus.
  • Advanced skills in professional video shooting and non-linear editing, preferably with Adobe Premiere.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and planning skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and work effectively as a member of a team.
