Job Purpose

To ensure that Epiroc SA Pty Ltd complies with all SHEQ legal and Mine and/or customer requirements. Coordinate, assist and drive Operational requirements of Contracts, including all Epiroc SA, Epiroc Group legal and Other Requirements.

In this position you will be the primary driver of Continuous Improvement initiatives to enhance customer satisfaction and exceed legal requirements.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, implement and maintain an integrated certified management system (IMS) that fulfills the ISO 9001, ISO14001, ISO 45001 standards for Epiroc SA Pty Ltd (Customer sites  as required by Epiroc and/or Customer).
  • Be the primary driver of the SHEQ system ,processes and procedures at the PSD Service Centre in Kathu ,Northern Cape. This includes ISO implementation and maintenance for the premises and provide support to the Local Distribution Centre (LDC) on request and as needed.

  • Customer Safety File Compliance (Legal, RA’s, Checklists, Training rollout, Continuous Improvements, etcetera)
  • Drive ,with support from Epiroc Leadership all Epiroc SHEQ systems, and initiatives ,such as Safestart training ,continuous improvements projects(local and global) ,Group campaigns as well as local roadshows and programs
  • Implement and maintain hazard / aspect and risk / impact awareness program / campaigns
  • Implement, assist and control SHEQ risk assessments and make recommendations for improvements as required to the Mine and Epiroc Site Manager as well as Regional SHEQ Specialist.

  • Ensure all SHEQ requirements are adhered to, including the issue and use of PPE, with the objective of achieving the Mine and/or Epiroc target of zero accidents, incidents, and property damage.
  • Coordinate, report, and control accurate record keeping relating to SHEQ statistics and participate on incident investigations as and when required.
  • Participate in daily / weekly / monthly SHEQ or other meetings and report any SHEQ statistics as required at within your areas of responsibility

  • Assist with COIDAct (Compensation, Occupation, Injuries and Diseases Act) implementation, reporting and compliance.
  • Ensure that SHEQ Objectives and targets for Epiroc South Africa are rolled out and effectively implement at areas of responsibilities ( Mine including Customer Continuous improvement initiatives ).
  • Assist and support the roll out of the Epiroc Local as well as Group SHEQ strategy for areas under your responsibilities (branch ,mine sites and customer site compliance obligations).
  • Implement initiatives and processes to prevent injuries, ill-health, and environmental pollution (i.e., Focusing on pro-active rather than re-active) to enhance a culture of SHEQ awareness and good practices (i.e., total well-being of employees).

  • Be the primary Audit Lead and verify (e.g., GAP analysis) that all PSD and TLD Mine sites comply with Legal and Epiroc Group requirements including the Customer driven requirements.
  • Assist with the collection and correct reporting of all SHEQ statistics / information required from the branch and Mine sites for the quarterly Sustainability Reporting as per Epiroc Group requirements.
  • Assist and advise with necessary SHEQ Training Needs for the Mine site to ensure compliance with all statutory and other requirements (i.e., Legal appointments, Driven machinery, Lifting equipment, etc.).
  • Ensure that Site based Employees (branches and mine sites)perform and always adhere to the legal duties assigned by the OHSAS as well as MHSA legislation and regulations . 

  • Be the primary for all Department of Labour(DoL) Inspections and assist with the preparation for the branches as well as customer sites upon receipt of an Inspection date from that government department
  • This position is responsible for all customer sites in South Africa in terms of the KPI’s specified, although the employee will be based in Kathu, Northern Cape
  • SHEQ issues needing attention in other geographical areas of South Africa will also be prioritised -such as  Limpopo province, Northwest province, Mpumalanga, and Free State areas but more responsibilities can be assigned once on board

  • Any other ad-hoc tasks and/or responsibilities at the discretion of the Area Manager and Regional SHEQ Specialist.
  • This position will have primary responsibilities in the Northern Cape region, but it is envisaged that regular scheduled visits to other provinces (upon request) as well as Head Office will be required, sometimes ad-hoc and with short notice due to the nature of our operations,
  • Will carry out any other function or duty as may be required in terms of “The Epiroc Way”.

Competences, Skills and Experience

  • Willingness to travel extensively as the responsibilities is across various provinces
  • At least Five years relevant Mining/Engineering in a mining environment.
  • Technical aptitude and understanding of basic mining practises and product applications will be advantageous
  • Code B drivers’ licence
  • ISO 9001, ISO 14001 & ISO 45001 Implementation, and internal auditing experience.

  • Auditors’ courses for Safety and Risk Control Management
  • Risk Assessment Techniques (SWIFT, HAZOP and FMECA, WRAC and HIRA, etc).
  • Good understanding of the MHSA Act and Operational Application of Legislation.
  • Legal Compliance Auditing experience will be advantageous.
  • MS Office, Knowledge, and Applications

Educational Qualifications

  • Degree or National Diploma in relevant SHEQ Discipline.
  • Nebosh or Other additional Qualifications will be advantageous
  • Additional Certificates or Short courses (HWSETA or MQA);
  • OHS Legislation (MHSA and Regulations and Construction regulations)
  • Incident Investigation (ICAM or similar)
  • SAMTRAC or CMSOC 1 and II is essential
