Internship Overview
We are offering two internship opportunities within the Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC) programme, part of the National Integrated Cyberinfrastructure System (NICIS).
This internship aims to provide graduates with practical experience through research and development of competitive technologies and innovative products.
Successful candidates will work under the guidance of experienced researchers and engineers within cross-functional teams in Cape Town.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer and maintain High Performance Computing (HPC) and Cloud computing environments
- Support and manage the CHPC helpdesk platform
- Ensure operational efficiency of HPC and Cloud systems
- Manage user access and file organization
- Engage in continuous learning of new technologies
- Develop and maintain technical documentation and best practices
- Monitor health and performance of the HPC environment
- Participate in projects involving system upgrades or new implementations
- Conduct research on HPC and Cloud systems, including hardware and software
- Attend necessary technical and on-the-job training
- Provide system administration support to CHPC staff
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- A National diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Systems Engineering, or a related field
- Knowledge of LINUX operating systems is advantageous
- Relevant industry certification in ICT is a plus
- Practical programming experience in C, C++, and Fortran
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment
- Excellent time management and initiative-taking abilities
- Good verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with diverse teams
- Attention to detail, strong work ethic, and a high standard of excellence
- Fast learner and ambitious with high personal goals
- Capable of multitasking and meeting project deadlines
