Stipend Information: As an intern in the field, you will receive a monthly stipend from the ILO based on the cost of living in the area of the duty station.
If you have funding from another institution, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive the appropriate monthly stipend. Travel expenses to the duty station will be your responsibility.
The internship is hosted by the ILO Decent Work Technical Support Team for Eastern and Southern Africa, focusing on enhancing social protection systems.
Purpose of the Internship
The ILO Internship Programme aims to:
- Increase understanding of international issues within the ILO’s framework.
- Provide practical experience related to participants’ fields of study.
- Note that this internship is not intended as a pathway for a career in the ILO; there is no expectation of further employment afterward.
Required Applicant Criteria
- No close relatives serving in the ILO.
- This must be your first internship with the ILO.

Responsibilities and Learning Areas
Interns will support initiatives related to strengthening national social protection systems through the following focal areas:
- Awareness Raising and Communication:
- Assist in organizing workshops and events related to social protection.
- Develop communication materials, including social media content and human interest stories.
- Policy Advice and Capacity Development:
- Document lessons learned from various initiatives related to social security and social protection.
- Support the development of training materials for tripartite constituents.
- UN and Multilateral Collaboration:
- Assist in preparing information for UN meetings and documenting lessons learned from joint programmes.
Educational and Experience Requirements
- Education: Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a relevant Master’s programme (e.g., economy, social science).
- Experience: Some experience in developing countries, particularly in social protection or social development arenas.
- Languages: Proficiency in English; French and/or Portuguese is an added advantage.
Competencies
- Strong synthesizing and communication skills.
- Ability to work adaptively in a multicultural environment.
