Position Purpose:
As a Trainee Train Assistant, you will assist the Train Driver in the safe and effective operation of various types of trains and locomotives.

Your primary role is to ensure that freight and cargo reach their destinations safely, on time, and in good condition to meet customer needs.


Position Outputs:

Duties Preparation:

  • Sign on at designated workplace and receive allocated duties.
  • Determine which locomotive to prepare and ensure necessary equipment is placed and in working order.
  • Assist in the start-up and braking tests of locomotives and ensure cleanliness of working areas.

Locomotive Preparation:

  • Conduct pre-trip inspections to guarantee compliance with roadworthiness and safety standards.

Communication Setup:

  • Prepare and check functionality of communication devices, such as radios and handsets.

Pre-Trip Checks:

  • Perform thorough checks of locomotives and trains including attaching/detaching vehicles, mounting telemeters, and brake tests under the guidance of the Train Driver.

Shunting Operations:

  • Execute shunting activities as directed, including moving trucks and updating vehicle lists.

Assistance During Transit:

  • Support the Train Driver during the journey to ensure the safe operation of the train, including observing signal displays and responding to incidents.

Safety Compliance:

  • Adhere to all safety protocols to maintain a competent and motivated approach to work.

Communication:

  • Provide timely and accurate feedback to the Train Driver regarding any incidents or deviations.

Administrative Duties:

  • Assist in administrative tasks and complete the Train journal for processing after shifts.

    Qualifications and Experience:

    • Educational Requirements:
      • Matriculation (Grade 12) with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
    • Other Requirements:
      • Must undergo periodic medical surveillance and safety assessments.
      • Minimum height of 1.6m.
      • Demonstrated ability to carry heavy objects.
    • Functional Training:
      • Completion of theoretical and practical training to receive certification as a Train Assistant.

    Competencies Required:

    Knowledge:

    1. Understanding of communication systems.
    2. Familiarity with depot layouts and locomotive classes.
    3. Train working rules and safety regulations including the Health and Safety Act and first aid procedures.

    Skills:

    1. Coupling and uncoupling locomotives.
    2. Observational and time management skills.
    3. Effective communication and judgement.

    Attributes:

    1. Safety conscious and punctual.
    2. Results-oriented and able to handle stress.
    3. Willingness to work shifts.
