Job Overview
Transnet is currently recruiting two Occupational Hygiene Assistants to join the Occupational Health Hygiene department at the Corporate Centre in Johannesburg.
The purpose of this role is to assist in assessing workers’ exposure to occupational health risks and help implement measures to eliminate or reduce these risks to acceptable levels. The successful candidates will support Occupational Hygiene programmes and provide both technical and administrative support under the supervision of an Occupational Hygiene Technologist or Hygienist.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- National Diploma in Occupational Hygiene, Environmental Health, Ergonomics, Human Physiology, or Occupational Health
- Legal Knowledge Certificate in Occupational Hygiene
- Registration as an Occupational Hygiene Assistant with the Southern African Institute for Occupational Hygiene
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in Occupational Hygiene
Advantageous
- Additional training or experience in:
- Occupational hygiene
- Ergonomics
- Human factors (HF)
- Improvement projects
Knowledge and Skills
Candidates should have knowledge in the following areas:
- Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations
- Railway Safety Standards
- Occupational Hygiene standards
- SANAS accreditation requirements for occupational hygiene inspection bodies
- Development of occupational hygiene procedures and standards
- Project management principles
Key Responsibilities
Occupational Hygiene Support
- Plan and execute occupational hygiene programmes in assigned areas
- Conduct workplace surveys and investigations
- Assist with occupational health risk assessments
- Collect samples during workplace investigations and surveys
- Prepare and ship samples to laboratories for analysis
Reporting and Data Analysis
- Compile reports, presentations, meeting minutes, and memoranda
- Analyse and interpret occupational hygiene data
- Provide professional advice on occupational hygiene matters
Equipment and Laboratory Management
- Inspect occupational hygiene equipment and laboratory accessories
- Maintain laboratory equipment and sampling media
- Ensure survey equipment is available and functional
Administrative and Compliance Duties
- Manage documentation for the Quality Management System (ISO 17020)
- Maintain programme documentation and update records
- Upload relevant documents on TIMS
- Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and professional standards
Procurement and Inventory Management
- Assist with procurement processes and budgeting
- Manage requests for quotations and purchase orders
- Maintain inventory of consumables and office supplies
Coordination and Support
- Coordinate occupational hygiene survey bookings
- Support the preparation and implementation of occupational hygiene programmes across Transnet Operating Divisions
