Job Overview

The Fresh Foods Manager is responsible for controlling and coordinating all operations within the Fruit and Vegetable, Deli, Bakery, Fisheries, and Perishable departments in store.

The role focuses on improving retail profitability by managing merchandising, stock control, product ordering, people management, and maintaining food safety and hygiene standards. The successful candidate will ensure departments operate efficiently while delivering excellent product availability and customer service.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Matric (Grade 12)

Advantageous

  • Retail Diploma

Other Requirements

  • Valid driver’s licence

Experience

Candidates should have:

  • Management experience within a supermarket environment
  • Experience in a similar role such as Fresh Foods Manager, Fresh Foods Controller, or Perishable Manager
  • Retail experience within FMCG
  • Merchandising experience

Key Responsibilities

Profit Growth

  • Monitor departmental performance to ensure profitability and sales growth
  • Implement strategies to optimise sales and margin performance

Product Ordering & Layout

  • Manage product ordering processes and ensure optimal stock availability
  • Maintain effective department layouts to maximise sales

Ranging & Merchandising

  • Ensure correct product ranges are stocked in line with store requirements
  • Maintain high merchandising standards to improve product visibility and customer experience

Markdowns, Shrinkage & Administration

  • Monitor stock levels and shrinkage
  • Manage markdowns and inventory administration

People Management

  • Lead and supervise staff within fresh food departments
  • Ensure teams maintain high productivity and service standards

Food Safety & Hygiene Management

  • Ensure strict adherence to food safety regulations
  • Maintain compliance with store hygiene and safety standards

Knowledge and Skills

The ideal candidate should have knowledge of:

  • Fresh food product categories (Fruit & Vegetables, Deli, Bakery, Fisheries, and Perishables)
  • Stock handling and inventory control
  • OHSA safety regulations
  • FMCG retail principles
  • Ordering systems and catalogue ordering processes
  • Retail merchandising standards and principles
