Carbon Market Watch seeks a highly motivated and experienced Communications Director to lead communication strategies and activities.

Job Title: Communications Director
Job Location: Brussels, Belgium (with remote work from Belgian residence)
Closing Date: 12 April 2026 (end of day)
Contract: Full-time (80%), Permanent contract under Belgian law

The role involves overseeing a team of four communication specialists, working closely with the executive director, and contributing to the organization’s strategic development to enhance outreach and impact.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic and Organizational Leadership

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of organizational strategy with a focus on political communication.
  • Lead the creation of overarching organizational communication and campaign strategies, including AI policy use.
  • Broaden CMW’s audience reach beyond policy circles while maintaining advocacy integrity.

  • Oversee communications related to research and advocacy outputs in collaboration with policy experts.
  • Ensure the efficiency and functionality of CMW’s communication infrastructure and tools.

Communications Management

  • Edit and oversee the quality of publications, articles, press releases, and social media content.
  • Develop compelling narratives and messaging strategies.
  • Manage monthly newsletter production.

  • Liaise with journalists, enhance media engagement, and monitor media coverage.
  • Oversee website content management and updates.
  • Provide communications support for public events and activities.
  • Contribute to grant applications, reporting, and annual organizational reports.

Team Leadership and Support

  • Conduct regular team meetings, align communication activities with organizational goals.
  • Ensure effective deployment of the communications team across topics and skills.
  • Line manage communication officers and interns.
  • Oversee contracts for external communication services.
  • Assist with recruitment processes as needed.

Monitoring and Capacity Building

  • Monitor climate and energy policy developments and general political news affecting CMW.
  • Provide capacity-building support to the policy team.
  • Support the executive director in external communications.
  • Contribute to team activities and organizational growth.

Professional and Personal Attributes

  • Minimum of eight years’ experience in communications, public relations, journalism, or related fields.
  • Proven team management and organizational skills, capable of handling multiple deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; native-level English; knowledge of French and Spanish advantageous.

  • Strong media relations experience.
  • Successful track record in launching campaigns, events, and media outreach.
  • Experience managing websites and social media platforms.

  • Broad understanding of EU and international climate policies; knowledge of carbon markets and pricing is a plus.
  • Experience in EU-funded projects and partner collaborations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and alignment with CMW values.

What We Offer

  • A full-time (or 80% part-time) permanent contract under Belgian law.
  • Competitive salary starting from €5,900 gross/month (based on 8 years of experience), plus benefits including 13th month, meal vouchers, mobile phone, transport allowance, travel insurance, home-working allowance, additional holidays, and office closures.
