Role Overview
GitLab is hiring a Staff Backend (Python) Engineer to join its AI Engineering team, working on GitLab Duo Chat—an AI-powered chat experience embedded across the DevSecOps platform.

This is a senior technical leadership role focused on building scalable, reliable, and secure backend systems that power AI-driven workflows. You will lead architecture decisions, integrate large language models (LLMs), and guide engineering teams in delivering high-impact solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Architecture
- Define backend architecture and technical roadmap for Duo Chat
- Lead high-impact technical decisions and solve complex engineering challenges
- Reduce technical debt and improve long-term system maintainability
AI & Backend Development
- Integrate and scale generative AI models (including LLM providers like Google Vertex AI)
- Build and maintain backend services using Python and Ruby on Rails
- Improve response quality and reliability of AI-powered chat systems
API & System Design
- Design and maintain REST and GraphQL APIs
- Ensure scalability, performance, and seamless frontend integration
- Implement robust backend logic and data models
Observability & Reliability
- Improve logging, tracing, and debugging workflows
- Strengthen system observability and incident response readiness
- Enhance testing practices and code reliability
Mentorship & Collaboration
- Mentor engineers through code reviews and architectural guidance
- Collaborate across cross-functional teams in an asynchronous environment
- Contribute to on-call rotations and system reliability improvements
Candidate Profile
Required Experience
- Strong experience building backend systems in Python
- Proven ability to design and lead technical architecture
- Experience with REST and/or GraphQL APIs
- Strong SQL skills and experience with relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL)
AI & Technical Expertise
- Experience integrating large language models (LLMs) into applications
- Familiarity with generative AI workflows and prompt design
- Experience working with cloud AI platforms (e.g. Google Vertex AI)
Additional Strengths
- Experience working with Ruby on Rails (or willingness to learn)
- Ability to drive technical roadmaps in collaboration with stakeholders
- Strong mentoring and leadership capabilities
- Excellent communication skills in remote, async-first environments

The Duo Chat team within GitLab AI Engineering focuses on building and scaling AI-powered chat experiences across the platform.
You will work with a cross-functional team of backend, frontend, and AI specialists to:
- Integrate generative AI capabilities
- Improve system performance and scalability
- Enhance observability, testing, and reliability
The team operates asynchronously, leveraging GitLab’s collaborative workflows and documentation-driven processes.
