Internship Overview
The Pinelands Conservation Intern (VSU) role is part of TNC Virginia’s STEP (Short-Term Experience Program), designed to create pathways for students to gain hands-on experience in conservation.

This internship offers a unique blend of fieldwork and technical learning, providing exposure to forest management, ecological restoration, and conservation science at the Piney Grove Preserve.
Key Responsibilities
Fieldwork & Data Collection
- Assist with ecological field data collection using tools like Survey123
- Conduct vegetation monitoring, tree coring, and seed collection
- Support forest management and restoration activities
GIS & Technical Support
- Use ArcGIS Pro to process and analyze field data
- Create maps for conservation planning and public outreach
Conservation Operations
- Assist the Pinelands Team with land management and protection tasks
- Participate in stewardship and conservation activities
Learning & Development Opportunities
- Gain hands-on experience in forest stewardship and restoration
- Learn about prescribed fire management and invasive species control
- Attend professional development webinars and training sessions
- Network with TNC staff and partners
- Present a final internship summary to the Virginia team
Qualifications
Required
- Current student at Virginia State University (VSU)
- Strong interest in conservation and environmental careers
- Willingness to work outdoors in varying conditions
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Preferred
- Experience with ArcGIS Pro or ArcGIS Online
- Background in environmental science, forestry, or related fields
Additional Requirements
- Valid driver’s license required
- Must comply with TNC’s Auto Safety Program
- Ability to participate in fieldwork at least once per week
