Job Overview

The Global Director of Biodiversity Science is a senior leadership role responsible for shaping and advancing TNC’s global biodiversity science strategy.

This position will lead a newly established science function, serving as a central hub for collaboration across scientists, practitioners, and partners worldwide. The Director will define a bold scientific vision, strengthen global partnerships, and ensure biodiversity outcomes are measurable, scalable, and impactful.

This role blends scientific leadership, strategic thinking, and global collaboration, requiring the ability to influence across disciplines, regions, and cultures.

Key Responsibilities

Scientific Leadership & Strategy

  • Define and lead TNC’s global biodiversity science vision
  • Advance methodologies for biodiversity monitoring, indicators, and impact assessment
  • Support regional teams in designing and demonstrating conservation outcomes

Global Collaboration & Partnerships

  • Build and maintain relationships with global partners, scientists, and institutions
  • Facilitate cross-regional knowledge exchange and scientific collaboration
  • Strengthen engagement in global biodiversity platforms (e.g., IPBES, CBD)

Programme Leadership & Delivery

  • Oversee complex, multi-year, multi-region biodiversity initiatives
  • Ensure scientific rigor, financial sustainability, and alignment with organizational goals
  • Collaborate with climate and social science teams to integrate cross-cutting priorities

Innovation & Futures Thinking

  • Lead scenario planning, forecasting, and forward-looking scientific approaches
  • Guide the responsible use of emerging technologies, including AI-driven tools
  • Explore innovative solutions to address evolving biodiversity challenges

Fundraising & External Engagement

  • Support donor engagement, grant writing, and funding proposals
  • Communicate scientific priorities and impact to stakeholders and partners
  • Help secure funding for global biodiversity science initiatives

Capacity Building

  • Strengthen scientific capacity across regions
  • Provide mentorship, advisory support, and training
  • Promote inclusive, cross-cultural collaboration and learning

Qualifications

  • PhD (or equivalent) in biodiversity science or a related field
  • Minimum 8+ years of relevant professional experience
  • Proven supervisory and leadership experience
  • Strong track record in scientific research, publishing, and programme leadership

Skills & Competencies

  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Ability to translate complex science for diverse audiences
  • Experience working across disciplines (e.g., social science, Indigenous knowledge systems)
  • Strong grant writing and fundraising capabilities
  • Experience in global conservation and multi-country programmes
  • Knowledge of biodiversity governance platforms (e.g., IPBES, CBD)
  • Familiarity with emerging technologies in conservation (e.g., AI tools)
  • Strategic thinking with a focus on innovation and long-term impact
