About the Programme
The TWAS-CSIR Postgraduate Fellowship Programme is a prestigious initiative by The World Academy of Sciences and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.
It supports talented researchers from developing countries to pursue PhD-level research in India across cutting-edge scientific fields. The programme is designed to strengthen scientific capacity and foster international collaboration in science and technology.
Programme Overview
Fellowships are hosted in CSIR research laboratories and institutes across India and are available in two formats:
Full-Time Fellowship
- For candidates not yet enrolled in a PhD
- Duration: Up to 4 years
- Must register at an Indian university
Sandwich Fellowship
- For candidates already enrolled in a PhD in their home country
- Duration: Minimum 6 months, up to 3 years
- Requires a “Registration and No Objection Certificate” from home institution

- Agricultural Sciences
- Biological & Medical Sciences (including Neurosciences)
- Chemical Sciences
- Engineering Sciences
- Astronomy, Space & Earth Sciences

What the Fellowship Covers
The programme provides:
- Monthly stipend (living costs, food, health insurance)
- Subsidized accommodation
- Access to world-class research facilities in India
Note: The stipend is not convertible into foreign currency.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be 35 years or younger by 31 December of the application year
- Be a national of a developing country (excluding India)
- Hold a Master’s degree in science or technology
- Be employed in their home country with a research assignment
- Not hold residency in India or any developed country
- Provide proof of English proficiency (if applicable)
- Secure an acceptance letter from a CSIR institution
- Commit to returning to their home country after completion
Additional Requirements
For Sandwich Applicants:
- Must be enrolled in a PhD in their home country
- Provide a signed “No Objection Certificate”
For Full-Time Applicants:
- Must be willing to enroll in a PhD programme in India

Application Process
- Applications must be submitted online via the TWAS portal only
- Applicants must obtain an acceptance letter from a CSIR institute before or by the deadline
- Only one application per year is allowed within TWAS programmes

Key Notes
- Fellows must not take up other assignments during the fellowship
- Candidates are responsible for expenses of accompanying family members
- Results will be announced late 2026 or early 2027
- Fellowship start date: No earlier than 2027
