Position Overview

UNDP is seeking a highly motivated AI Innovation and Mediation Intern with a strong technology background and an interest in mediation, negotiation, and alternative dispute resolution (ADR).

This unique internship sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, innovation, conflict resolution, and organizational effectiveness. The successful candidate will contribute to the design, testing, and implementation of AI-powered tools that support mediation and ombuds services across the United Nations system.

The role offers hands-on experience working with emerging technologies, automation systems, AI-powered workflows, data analysis, and knowledge management solutions while supporting real-world mediation initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Support AI Innovation for Mediation Services

The intern will assist the Mediation Unit in developing innovative AI-powered solutions that improve efficiency and effectiveness across mediation functions.

Key duties include:

  • Supporting research, development, and testing of AI-enabled mediation tools.
  • Assisting in the design and automation of workflows, templates, and case management processes.
  • Structuring, organizing, and analyzing mediation-related data.
  • Supporting the development of reporting and knowledge management tools.
  • Exploring AI-driven decision-support concepts and mediation applications.
  • Integrating generative AI technologies into mediation support services.

Develop AI Tools and Automation Solutions

The successful candidate will help:

  • Create AI systems and workflows that streamline mediation operations.
  • Identify and evaluate AI resources relevant to mediation and ombuds practices.
  • Develop AI chatbots that support access to organizational policies and resources.
  • Build dedicated AI knowledge spaces for UN agencies served by the Office.
  • Support the development of AI Judge prototype environments using UN dispute tribunal case data.
  • Design and implement case management automation processes.
  • Create AI-generated case data summaries and analytical snippets.
  • Recommend innovative AI applications that can strengthen mediation and ombuds functions.

Support Training and Learning Initiatives

Working closely with the Mediation Specialist and Manager, the intern will:

  • Assist in preparing mediation training materials.
  • Support learning and development projects.
  • Explore AI-enhanced learning methodologies.
  • Develop innovative training tools and resources.
  • Identify AI technologies that can improve mediation and ombuds training delivery.

Provide Administrative and Project Support

The intern will also:

  • Assist with project coordination and event preparation.
  • Support communication and stakeholder engagement activities.
  • Contribute to documentation and knowledge-sharing efforts.
  • Perform additional substantive and administrative duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme in:
    • Computer Science
    • Artificial Intelligence
    • Data Science
    • Information Systems
    • Software Engineering
    • Related technology fields

OR

  • Be enrolled in the final year of a bachelor’s degree in a relevant technology discipline.

OR

  • Have graduated from a relevant technology programme within the past year.

OR

  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship programme in a technology-related field.

Candidates with advanced degrees in Law, Human Resources, Psychology, Organizational Behaviour, Counselling, or related social sciences may also be considered if they possess strong technical and AI-related skills.

  • Strong understanding of AI systems and technologies.

    • Other generative AI tools

Technology and Innovation

  • Familiarity with workflow automation platforms.
  • Understanding of data visualization tools.
  • Experience with prototyping technologies is desirable.
  • Interest in emerging AI applications and digital transformation.

Alternative Dispute Resolution Interest

Applicants should have a strong interest in:

Stipend

Current rates include:

  • New York-based internships: USD 1,000 per month
  • Remote internships: Stipend determined according to the intern’s physical location
