Position Overview
Amnesty International is seeking an experienced and visionary leader to serve as its next Head of Economic and Social Justice.

Contract Type: Permanent
Working Hours: 35 Hours Per Week
Salary: £78,733 per annum (London). Salary for other locations will be based on local compensation structures.

This senior leadership position will oversee the planning, development, coordination, and implementation of Amnesty International’s global strategy on economic, social, and cultural rights, including migrant labour issues. The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership across research, policy, advocacy, campaigning, fundraising, and donor engagement while ensuring a coordinated and effective organizational approach to advancing economic and social justice globally.
Reporting within the Climate, Economic and Social Justice & Corporate Accountability Programme, the role offers a unique opportunity to shape international human rights policy and contribute to systemic change affecting millions of people worldwide.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership and Programme Development
- Lead and coordinate Amnesty International’s global strategy for the promotion and protection of economic, social, and cultural rights.
- Drive organizational priorities related to migrant labour rights and economic justice issues.
- Ensure a coordinated international approach across research, advocacy, campaigns, and policy initiatives.
- Identify emerging human rights challenges and develop strategic responses.
Team Leadership and Management
- Manage and lead the Economic and Social Justice team.
- Oversee work planning, priority setting, budgeting, and resource allocation.
- Support staff development, mentoring, and performance management.
- Foster collaboration, accountability, and high-performance working practices.
- Identify training and professional development needs within the team.
Policy, Research and Legal Advisory Leadership
- Serve as Amnesty International’s principal law and policy adviser on economic, social, and cultural rights.
- Provide expert guidance to senior leadership, staff, country sections, and movement structures.
- Lead the development of legal, policy, research, and advocacy frameworks.
- Ensure quality assurance across major organizational outputs.
- Monitor adherence to established policy, legal, and research standards.
Advocacy and Campaign Development
- Support the design and implementation of global campaigns addressing economic and social justice issues.
- Strengthen advocacy strategies that influence governments, institutions, corporations, and international bodies.
- Ensure research findings effectively inform policy and campaign objectives.
Fundraising and Donor Engagement
- Contribute to the diversification of the team’s funding portfolio.
- Build and maintain relationships with foundations, trusts, and institutional donors.
- Support donor reporting and funding proposal development.
- Identify opportunities to secure sustainable financial support for programme priorities.
Required Skills and Experience
Professional Experience
- Significant experience providing legal and policy advice related to economic, social, and cultural rights.
- Demonstrated experience leading complex international human rights, development, or social justice initiatives.
- Strong track record of managing multidisciplinary teams and organizational resources.
- Experience overseeing strategic planning, programme delivery, and budget management.
- Proven success in fundraising and donor relationship management, particularly with foundations and trusts.
Technical Knowledge
- Extensive knowledge of economic, social, and cultural rights frameworks.
- Strong understanding of international human rights law and policy.
- Experience developing research, advocacy, and campaign strategies.
- Familiarity with migrant labour rights and related human rights issues.
Desirable Qualifications
- Interdisciplinary expertise across economics, social sciences, development studies, public policy, or related fields.
- Experience working in international NGOs, advocacy organizations, multilateral institutions, or human rights organizations.
- Knowledge of emerging global trends affecting economic and social justice.
