Role Overview
Refugees International is seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Accountant to support the Director of Finance and Accounting in maintaining the organization’s financial operations and compliance.

Experience Level: Entry-Level / Minimum 3 Years Professional Accounting Experience
Salary: USD $65,000 – $70,000 per year
As a key member of the Finance team, the Accountant will play an essential role in ensuring accurate financial recordkeeping, managing accounts payable and receivable, supporting payroll administration, maintaining the general ledger, assisting with budgeting activities, and supporting annual audits and regulatory reporting requirements.
The successful candidate will have strong nonprofit accounting experience, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable
- Process a high volume of vendor invoices while verifying W9, 1099, and OFAC documentation.
- Enter expenses into the accounting system accurately and promptly.
- Record donations and revenue in accordance with donor restrictions and intent.
- Deposit checks accurately and in a timely manner.
- Reconcile revenue records between the accounting system and Development Department records on a monthly basis.
- Record stock donations and subsequent sales transactions.
Financial Reconciliation
- Prepare monthly bank account reconciliations.
- Reconcile investment accounts regularly.
- Ensure employees reconcile company credit card statements according to organizational policies.
- Record credit card transactions accurately in Sage Intacct.
- Manage employee travel advances and expense reconciliation processes.
General Ledger and Financial Reporting
- Prepare journal entries in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Maintain journal vouchers and general ledger reconciliations.
- Record payroll journal entries and reconcile payroll tax filings, including Form 941 submissions.
- Support financial reporting and analysis activities.
Budgeting and Financial Planning
- Assist with departmental and organization-wide budgeting processes.
- Support the preparation and monitoring of project budgets.
- Prepare budget-versus-actual reports.
- Track expenditures against approved budgets for departments and projects.
Payroll Administration
- Prepare and process semi-monthly payroll submissions.
- Maintain compliance with payroll requirements across multiple U.S. states.
- Support payroll-related reporting and reconciliation activities.
Compliance and Internal Controls
- Maintain effective financial controls, procedures, and systems.
- Support fraud prevention and risk management efforts.
- Assist with audit requests and compliance reviews.
- Recommend policy and process improvements to strengthen financial operations.
Month-End and Year-End Activities
- Support month-end financial close activities.
- Assist with annual audit preparation and documentation.
- Prepare documentation required for IRS Form 990 reporting.
- Support annual 1099 preparation and filing processes.
Additional Duties
- Perform other finance and accounting responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
To be successful in this role, candidates should possess:
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Professional Experience
- Minimum of three years of experience as an Accountant.
- Previous nonprofit accounting experience strongly preferred.
Technical Skills
- Experience using Sage Intacct accounting software.
- Familiarity with Bill.com or similar expense management platforms.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) requirements.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets.
- Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, budgeting, and financial reporting.

Salary and Benefits
The annual salary range for this position is:
USD $65,000 – $70,000 per year
