The Human Development Report Office (HDRO) advances human development by promoting innovative ideas, evidence-based policy solutions, and practical approaches that expand people’s opportunities, choices, and freedoms.
Best known for producing the globally recognized Human Development Report (HDR) and the Human Development Index (HDI), HDRO combines research, data analysis, policy engagement, outreach, and advocacy to address some of the world’s most pressing development challenges.
The 2026 Human Development Report explores how changes in planetary systems are shaping human development outcomes and how human progress can contribute to healthier relationships between people and nature.
Internship Opportunities
UNDP is offering two exciting internship opportunities within HDRO for students and recent graduates seeking hands-on experience in international development, research, communications, outreach, and policy engagement.
These internships provide a unique opportunity to contribute to one of the United Nations’ most influential research and policy initiatives while developing valuable professional skills.
Position 1: Research & Partnerships Intern
Role Overview
The Research & Partnerships Intern will work closely with HDRO’s research team in supporting the preparation of the 2026 Human Development Report and related analytical products, partnerships, and events.
The role is ideal for candidates interested in development research, policy analysis, international development, and evidence-based decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Research and Analysis
- Conduct quantitative and qualitative research for the Human Development Report.
- Support data analysis and compilation of charts, tables, and datasets.
- Undertake literature reviews and background research.
- Prepare research notes and analytical summaries.
Data and Statistical Support
- Assist in identifying and organizing data sources.
- Review and verify statistical materials used in reports.
- Support analysis and presentation of human development statistics.
Partnerships and Collaboration
- Assist with research partnership engagements.
- Support the preparation of concept notes, briefing materials, and background documents.
- Track action points and support follow-up activities with partners.
Publications and Communications
- Assist with fact-checking and proofreading.
- Support the development of communications materials related to research outputs.
- Contribute to report preparation and dissemination activities.
Event Support
- Assist with workshops, seminars, consultations, meetings, and other outreach events.

Position 2: Communications and Outreach Intern
Role Overview
The Communications and Outreach Intern will support HDRO’s integrated outreach efforts, helping communicate research findings and policy insights to global audiences through digital content, events, social media, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
This internship is ideal for individuals interested in communications, digital media, public affairs, knowledge management, and international development.
Key Responsibilities
Communications and Content Creation
- Draft and package communications materials for reports, events, and outreach activities.
- Support development of presentations, newsletters, social media content, and web materials.
- Design graphics, posters, and visual communication assets.
- Ensure consistency and quality across communication products.
Digital Outreach
- Assist with social media content scheduling and publishing.
- Support newsletter and digital platform management.
- Help amplify key reports, events, and initiatives across online channels.
- Monitor engagement metrics and prepare performance summaries.
Events and Outreach Activities
- Support webinars, briefings, consultations, and outreach events.
- Assist with participant communications and event logistics.
- Prepare concept notes, presentations, and event materials.
- Document event outcomes and prepare follow-up resources.
Knowledge Management
- Organize outreach trackers, databases, and contact lists.
- Support Communities of Practice and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
- Track media coverage and public references related to HDRO work.

Common Qualifications
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- Currently enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. programme.
- Enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree programme.
- Recently graduated and eligible under UNDP internship guidelines.
Language Requirements
- Excellent written and spoken English is required.
- Knowledge of another UN language is considered an asset.

Internship Benefits
Eligible interns may receive a monthly stipend in accordance with UNDP Internship Policy if they are not supported through another institution or scholarship programme.
