Opportunity Overview

UNEP is seeking an experienced Senior Consultant to support its growing portfolio of projects focused on low-carbon and climate-resilient buildings across Africa and South and South-East Asia.

The successful candidate will provide technical expertise, project coordination, stakeholder engagement, and implementation support for initiatives related to sustainable construction materials, circularity, thermal comfort, urban cooling solutions, energy efficiency, and climate resilience.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional to contribute directly to global climate action while working remotely with one of the world’s leading environmental organizations.

Key Responsibilities

Project Coordination and Administrative Support

The consultant will:

  • Support the day-to-day coordination of project activities.
  • Organize meetings, workshops, webinars, consultations, and stakeholder engagement activities.
  • Prepare agendas, presentations, meeting notes, and follow-up action plans.
  • Coordinate activities with governments, consultants, implementing partners, and stakeholders.
  • Maintain project documentation and filing systems.

Project Implementation Support

Responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring project implementation and work plans.
  • Tracking project deliverables, milestones, and reporting schedules.
  • Reviewing and quality-controlling outputs from consultants and implementing partners.
  • Supporting timely execution of project activities across multiple countries.

Technical Research and Analysis

The consultant will:

  • Conduct research on sustainable buildings and construction.
  • Analyze issues related to embodied carbon, circular economy practices, and climate resilience.
  • Support technical assessments of sustainable cooling solutions.
  • Prepare technical briefs, concept notes, reports, and knowledge products.
  • Collect and analyze relevant project data.

Communications and Outreach

Key duties include:

  • Documenting project activities and achievements.
  • Developing success stories and communication materials.
  • Supporting stakeholder outreach efforts.
  • Promoting Buildings and Cooling initiatives and activities under the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC).

Stakeholder Engagement

The consultant will:

  • Engage with national and local governments.
  • Coordinate with industry stakeholders, technical experts, and project partners.
  • Support GlobalABC working groups and collaborative networks.
  • Facilitate consultations, workshops, and multi-stakeholder dialogues.

Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting

Responsibilities include:

  • Preparing progress reports and activity summaries.
  • Supporting donor reporting requirements.
  • Tracking project indicators and maintaining monitoring tools.
  • Documenting lessons learned, best practices, and project impacts.

Event and Knowledge Management

The consultant will:

  • Organize capacity-building activities and training programmes.
  • Coordinate regional and international events.
  • Manage databases, stakeholder contact lists, and knowledge resources.
  • Support knowledge-sharing and learning initiatives.

Required Qualifications

Education

Applicants must possess:

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in:
    • Architecture
    • Civil Engineering
    • Industrial Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Environmental Science
    • Economics
    • Or a related discipline

Specialization in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable:

  • Sustainable Buildings and Construction
  • Climate Change
  • Resource Efficiency
  • Circular Economy
  • Energy Efficiency
  • Sustainable Urban Development

Professional Experience

Candidates must have:

  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Proven experience in project management and technical assistance at national and/or city level.
  • Experience working on sustainable buildings and construction policies.
  • Demonstrated expertise in climate-resilient and low-carbon building solutions.

Experience in the following areas is highly desirable:

  • Sustainable cooling systems
  • Circular construction materials
  • Thermal comfort strategies
  • Building sector value chains
  • Multi-stakeholder consultation processes
  • Climate and energy policy development

Regional Expertise

Strong understanding of the sustainable buildings and construction landscape in:

  • Africa
  • South Asia
  • South-East Asia

is highly desirable.

UN and International Experience

Experience working with:

  • United Nations agencies
  • International organizations
  • Development partners

will be considered an advantage.

Language Requirements

Required

  • Fluency in written and spoken English.

Desirable

Knowledge of additional United Nations languages is considered an asset.
