Position Overview

The Nature Conservancy is seeking a Biodiversity & Nature Markets Scientist to join its Global Science Team within the Biodiversity Credits Program.

Job Title: Biodiversity & Nature Markets Scientist
Organization: The Nature Conservancy (TNC)
Job Location: Global (Negotiable in countries where TNC has an established NGO)
Job Type: Full-Time
Salary: Up to $113,900 USD annually (U.S. salary range: $109,700–$113,900; international salaries vary by country)

This exciting role will help establish the scientific foundations for emerging biodiversity markets and biodiversity credit systems that support conservation while promoting equitable and scalable nature finance solutions.

The successful candidate will contribute to scientific research, biodiversity measurement frameworks, market integrity, biodiversity accounting, and global collaborations that shape the future of biodiversity credits.

This position can be based in any country where The Nature Conservancy has an established legal entity.

Key Responsibilities

As the Biodiversity & Nature Markets Scientist, you will:

Advance Biodiversity Science

  • Develop scientific frameworks supporting biodiversity credit markets.
  • Build research agendas focused on biodiversity measurement and accounting.
  • Identify critical scientific gaps affecting biodiversity market development.
  • Evaluate biodiversity monitoring approaches and emerging technologies.

Research and Innovation

  • Produce and contribute to peer-reviewed scientific publications.
  • Analyze biodiversity datasets and environmental information.
  • Develop scientific narratives that strengthen biodiversity market integrity.
  • Translate scientific findings into practical recommendations for policy and market development.

Collaboration and Partnerships

  • Work closely with TNC teams, academic institutions, NGOs, and international initiatives.
  • Organize scientific workshops, expert groups, and collaborative research initiatives.
  • Support multidisciplinary partnerships that strengthen biodiversity finance.

Technical Support

  • Provide scientific expertise for biodiversity credit projects.
  • Assess project feasibility, biodiversity outcomes, and implementation risks.
  • Contribute to biodiversity market design principles, including scalability and market integrity.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • A Master’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline plus at least four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A strong record of peer-reviewed scientific publications.
  • Knowledge of biodiversity markets, nature finance, or nature-positive initiatives.
  • Experience analyzing environmental or statistical data.
  • Experience writing grants or research proposals.
  • Experience leading or participating in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience managing complex scientific or conservation projects.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with the following will be highly competitive:

  • A PhD with one to three years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of biodiversity credit standards and certification frameworks.
  • Experience with biodiversity monitoring technologies such as:
    • Environmental DNA (eDNA)
    • Acoustic monitoring
    • Camera traps
    • Biodiversity MRV systems
  • Familiarity with voluntary and compliance biodiversity markets.
  • Experience facilitating international scientific collaborations.
  • Cross-cultural and multilingual experience.
  • Ability to travel internationally and collaborate across global time zones.

Salary and Benefits

The Nature Conservancy offers competitive compensation based on country of employment.

For candidates employed in the United States, the salary range is:

$109,700 – $113,900 USD per year
