Role Overview
GiveDirectly is seeking a highly analytical and detail-oriented Senior Manager, Accounting to lead important accounting, financial reporting, audit, and compliance activities.
Job Title: Senior Manager, Accounting
Organization: GiveDirectly
Location: Fully Remote – United States
Time Zone Requirement: Must overlap with an East Africa timezone by at least 3 hours
Base Salary: $115,000 per year
Target Bonus: 10% ($11,500)
Estimated Total Compensation: $126,500+ at target performance
Annual Benefits Stipend: $21,393
Travel: Approximately 1–2 trips per year
Reporting to the Controller, the successful candidate will help ensure accurate and timely financial reporting while providing expert guidance on U.S. GAAP, Uniform Guidance, revenue recognition, internal controls, and multi-country accounting.
The role is particularly suited to an experienced accounting professional with 7–10 years of experience, ideally within the nonprofit or international development sector.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management, Accounting & Reporting
- Lead key elements of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
- Ensure financial reporting is timely, accurate, and properly documented.
- Oversee revenue recognition in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
- Review and approve monthly accounting entries, reconciliations, and supporting analyses.
- Prepare accurate balance sheets, profit and loss statements, management reports, and other periodic financial reports.
- Maintain the integrity of the general ledger.
- Establish and enforce appropriate coding, review, and documentation processes.
- Make accounting decisions relating to treatments, estimates, and operational judgments.
- Ensure expenditures comply with donor requirements, regulatory standards, and internal policies.
- Develop and update financial policies and procedures.
- Review journal entries and reconciliations and ensure issues are resolved promptly.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting workflows and systems.
- Work with finance, treasury, payments, and operations teams to embed accounting requirements into organizational processes.
Audit & Compliance
- Manage the annual financial statement audit.
- Manage the Single Audit process.
- Support preparation of consolidated financial statements.
- Oversee regulatory filings, particularly Form 990.
- Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP, FASB guidance, and internal control requirements.
- Identify and address accounting and compliance gaps.
- Act as a key liaison between external auditors and internal teams.
- Ensure audit requests and responses are handled accurately and efficiently.
Team & Organizational Support
- Manage and support accounting staff where applicable.
- Review work and provide constructive feedback.
- Strengthen accounting team capabilities.
- Participate in cross-functional organizational initiatives.
- Represent accounting requirements and perspectives in organizational projects.
- Perform additional duties assigned by the Controller and other stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants should have:
- A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least 7 years of professional accounting or finance experience.
- Strong experience in financial data analysis and reporting.
- Professional proficiency in English.
- Advanced spreadsheet skills.
- Strong numerical and quantitative abilities.
A professional qualification such as CPA or ACCA is preferred.
Required Skills & Experience
Successful candidates should demonstrate:
U.S. GAAP & Financial Reporting
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP.
- Ability to research, interpret, and apply accounting guidance independently.
- Knowledge of Uniform Guidance.
- Experience with financial reporting and analysis.
International Accounting
- Experience with multi-country or multi-entity accounting.
- Knowledge of intercompany transactions.
- Experience with consolidations.
- Ability to navigate different local regulatory and reporting requirements.
- International nonprofit or development organization experience is desirable.
Audit & Compliance
- Experience working with external auditors.
- Experience managing audit processes.
- Understanding of internal controls and regulatory compliance.
Stakeholder Management
- Ability to work remotely with colleagues across different cultures and levels of seniority.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to explain complex accounting concepts to non-finance professionals.
- Professional credibility, tact, and diplomacy.
Technology & Systems
Candidates should have the ability and willingness to learn new technology platforms, including:
- Slack
- Sage Intacct
- Advanced spreadsheet tools

Location & Remote Work Requirements
Although this is a fully remote position, applicants must meet specific location requirements.
Candidates must:
- Be located on the U.S. East Coast.
- Be able to overlap with an East Africa timezone by at least three hours.
- Be prepared to take meetings as early as approximately 8:00 a.m.
- Have open working time during their afternoons.
The position also requires approximately 1–2 trips per year to one of GiveDirectly’s countries of operation for team retreats or field visits.
Compensation
GiveDirectly aims to provide competitive and equitable compensation based on role, location, and cost of living.
For U.S.-based employees:
Base Salary: $115,000
Target Bonus: 10% — approximately $11,500, with potential upside
Estimated Total Compensation at Target: $126,500+
Annual Benefits Stipend: $21,393
