About the Scientific Community-Building Fellowship

Advancing the science of plant-based meat requires bringing together expertise from a wide range of scientific and technical disciplines.

Many of the fields capable of addressing the hardest technical challenges in plant-based meat research are not yet well represented within the field. The Scientific Community-Building Fellow will help expand this research community by engaging professionals in the physical sciences, engineering, and other relevant disciplines.

The fellow will work closely with the Senior Scientific Partnerships Manager to identify key expertise, develop outreach strategies, build relationships, and bring new researchers and academic communities into the plant-based meat research ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities

Develop a Scientific Outreach Strategy

You will:

Work with the Senior Scientific Partnerships Manager to develop an outreach strategy for engaging critical and underrepresented disciplines in plant-based meat research.
Identify effective approaches for reaching target communities and determine what GFI can offer potential participants.
Understand core scientific and technical concepts in plant-based meat research, including concepts presented in academic research papers.
Translate technical concepts into language that is accessible and relevant to researchers from other disciplines.

Map Key Disciplines, Researchers and Forums

You will:

Create a database of relevant individuals, disciplines, academic communities, and scientific societies.
Identify opportunities for Good Food Institute (GFI) to participate in scientific forums where relevant stakeholders gather.
Research potential academic and professional communities that could contribute to plant-based meat research.

Develop Outreach Materials

You will:

Identify target universities, academic departments, and department heads.
Develop briefing materials, talking points, and audience-specific outreach tools.
Create persuasive materials to support relationship-building with researchers and academic departments.
Assess Good Food Institute (GFI)’s existing outreach materials and tools.
Recommend and implement improvements to outreach resources.

Support Outreach and Engagement

You will:

Coordinate outreach to priority stakeholders.
Schedule and facilitate meetings or symposia.
Design and conduct interviews and/or surveys.
Pilot outreach with a selected number of contacts from target lists.
Work with your supervisor to incorporate lessons from outreach activities into the strategy and toolkit.

Analyze and Present Findings

You will:

Analyze information collected through outreach, interviews, surveys, literature, and other sources.
Synthesize findings and identify meaningful conclusions and future directions.
Prepare a final report at the end of the fellowship.
Present a summary of findings to GFI’s Science and Technology team.

You may also perform other duties as assigned.

Who GFI Is Looking For

The ideal candidate will bring a combination of scientific knowledge, communication skills, research ability, and an interest in community-building.

Education and Scientific Background

Candidates should have:

Fluency in the culture of physical sciences and/or engineering disciplines, demonstrated through a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline, or at least three years of academic research experience.
Preference may be given to candidates pursuing an MSc or higher degree in a discipline relevant to plant-based meat research.

Relevant fields may include:

Materials science
Mechanical engineering
Soft matter physics
Chemical engineering
Biological engineering
Other physical sciences and engineering disciplines

Communication and Collaboration Skills

You should have:

The ability to translate technical concepts effectively across academic disciplines.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
The ability to communicate professionally with students, researchers, innovators, and science-interested members of the public.
The ability to work independently and manage self-paced work effectively.

Research and Community-Building Experience

Good Food Institute (GFI) values candidates with:

Experience planning scientific or academic research events.
Experience with scientific community-building initiatives.
Experience with academic societies, committees, or activities designed to bring scientists together.
Strong skills in analyzing and interpreting scientific literature and diverse data sources.
