This is a player-coach style technical leadership position. While the role requires strong technical credibility and the ability to participate in architecture and design discussions, the focus is on improving the engineering organization’s overall capability rather than simply writing code.
The successful candidate will work closely with engineering leadership, product teams and clinical stakeholders to ensure the organization builds scalable, reliable and maintainable technology.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
The Staff Engineer will:
- Own and evolve the architecture of the core platform.
- Work across React, Node.js/Express, Postgres and AWS ECS infrastructure.
- Drive the migration from JavaScript to TypeScript.
- Establish engineering patterns, tooling and development standards.
- Design and extend ETL pipelines and configuration-driven AI integration frameworks.
- Lead technical design reviews.
- Create architecture decision records (ADRs).
- Ensure major engineering decisions are properly documented.
- Identify and resolve systemic technical debt.
- Define the technical strategy for integrating ML and AI models into the core platform.
- Ensure AI/ML systems deliver strong scalability, performance and reliability. (Ashby)
AI and Machine Learning
A major focus of the position is the development and deployment of production-grade AI/ML systems.
The successful candidate will contribute to:
- LLM integration.
- AI integration frameworks.
- Machine learning model deployment.

Engineering Culture and Mentorship
The Staff Engineer will also help strengthen engineering capabilities across the organization.
Responsibilities include:
- Mentoring engineers at different experience levels.
- Pairing and conducting code reviews.
- Coaching engineers and improving technical capability.
- Establishing engineering standards.
- Improving code quality and testing practices.
- Supporting observability and monitoring.
- Developing on-call runbooks.
- Improving incident response processes.
- Supporting engineering hiring and interviews.
- Acting as a technical resource for product, clinical and business stakeholders.
Delivery and Operations
The role will work closely with engineering and product leadership to:
- Scope and sequence major technical initiatives.
- Identify and reduce technical risks.
- Support large-scale engineering projects.
- Define production support processes.
- Lead post-mortems.
- Drive systemic improvements following incidents.
- Work across UI, API, database and infrastructure layers.
Candidates should have genuine technical depth in at least two of these areas.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants should have:
- At least 8 years of professional software engineering experience.
- At least 3 years of experience in a senior or staff-level role.
- Deep expertise in JavaScript and TypeScript in production full-stack environments.
- Strong experience with React, Node.js/Express and Postgres.
- Experience designing and owning distributed systems or data pipeline architectures on AWS.
- Experience with AWS services such as ECS, RDS, S3 or Lambda.
- A proven record of technical mentorship.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience working in or leading engineering teams at a growth-stage startup.
- Significant experience architecting and deploying production-grade ML/AI systems.
- Experience integrating LLMs and managing machine learning model lifecycles. (Ashby)
