The role focuses on designing and implementing scalable backend services that power the company’s mobile app and marketplace.
Beyond backend engineering, the successful candidate will bring a strong understanding of how native mobile applications consume backend services. You will help guide backend architecture and API decisions to ensure they work effectively within mobile constraints such as versioning, backwards compatibility, release cycles, latency and offline behaviour.
You will work within a cross-functional product squad alongside engineers, product managers, designers and business stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
As a Senior Backend Engineer – Mobile App, you will:
- Design, build and maintain core APIs and backend services powering the mobile app and marketplace.
- Own the operation and monitoring of production systems.
- Act as the mobile-aware voice in backend decisions across engineering squads.
- Review API changes and technical designs to ensure they meet mobile app requirements and constraints.
- Identify potential mobile-related technical issues and raise them early.
- Integrate third-party systems and APIs into the platform.
- Design and implement new features and services.
- Identify engineering best practices and contribute to standards used across the engineering department.
- Produce clear technical documentation, diagrams, flowcharts, code comments and other supporting materials.
- Mentor junior engineers and support onboarding of new team members.
- Collaborate with engineers, product managers and business stakeholders.
- Share insights, achievements and results during relevant meetings.
- Occasionally propagate backend changes into frontend applications.
Requirements
Candidates should have:
- 7+ years of experience designing and building scalable backend services in modern production environments.
- Strong proficiency in Go.
- A deep understanding of distributed systems and service-oriented architecture.
- Experience with SQL and relational database design.
- Comfort with JavaScript/TypeScript, or the ability to quickly learn Node.js.
- Experience working on a team that builds and maintains a native mobile application.
- A practical understanding of how mobile apps consume backend services.
- Knowledge of mobile-specific backend considerations, including:
- API design for mobile
- Versioning
- Backwards compatibility
- Mobile release cycles
- Latency
- Offline behaviour
- General frontend knowledge and the ability to perform basic tasks within frontend applications.
- Strong ownership, initiative and the ability to navigate complex technical systems.
- Clear, direct and respectful communication skills.
- A collaborative, low-ego approach.
- Excellent English skills.
- Ability to work within a European time zone.
- Curiosity and willingness to experiment with new technologies, AI tools, frameworks and engineering practices.
A Computer Science or related degree, or equivalent professional experience, is desirable.
Additional Advantage
Experience reviewing designs and guiding engineers outside your immediate squad would be an advantage.

This is a fully remote position open to candidates based in Europe, including the UK.
