Introduction
UMK is currently seeking a Geotechnical Intern to join our team. This internship is an excellent opportunity to develop the skills and experience necessary for a successful career in Geotechnical Engineering.
Job Purpose
The Geotechnical Intern will support the Strata Control Officer in executing Strata Control functions within designated areas. The role involves providing critical geotechnical support to meet operational requirements, with key responsibilities including conducting audits, identifying hazards, and ensuring timely remedial actions.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12/ Matric Certificate.
- Diploma/Degree in Geology or Mining Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Open Pit experience (preferred).
- Registered or eligible for registration with a recognized professional association.
- Proven ability to meet the technical and responsibility requirements of a Mining Engineer.
- Valid driver’s license (Code 08).
- Certificate of fitness to work in a mining environment.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient report writing abilities.
- Knowledge of geotechnical engineering practices, principles, and processes.
- Basic understanding of the risk assessment process.
- Familiarity with Geotechnical Engineering best practices and new technologies.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Stress and time management skills.
Duties and Responsibilities
Ensure Safe Work Areas for Mining, Loading, and Hauling Operations
- Ensure adherence to mine design parameters (slopes, bench heights) and report deviations.
- Assist in drafting Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure safe operations.
Geotechnical Inspections and Monitoring
- Collaborate with the drill and blasting team to enhance highwall conditions.
- Conduct pre- and post-blast inspections for compliance and hazard identification.
- Inspect drilling blocks for adherence to planned drill hole depths and spacing.
- Monitor and report on general pit conditions; conduct daily pit inspections focused on drilling/loading operations.
Documentation and Risk Mitigation
- Maintain records of observations, documenting compliance with the Code of Practice (COP), SOPs, and geotechnical safety.
- Identify geotechnical risks and issue timely instructions to mitigate unsafe conditions.
- Effectively communicate geotechnical issues to mining personnel.
Slope Stability and Dump Monitoring
- Ensure compliance with the COP regarding rock falls and slope instability.
- Monitor loading practices to minimize risks of rolling rocks.
- Oversee dumping practices and dump wall stability.
- Monitor slope stability equipment data for highwall stability.
Data Collection and Hazard Planning
- Collect geotechnical field data and samples for rock testing.
- Assist in drafting and managing pit hazard plans.
Other Responsibilities
- Perform other ad hoc duties as directed by the supervisor.
