Introduction

United Manganese of Kalahari (UMK) is looking for a Mine Planning Intern to join our dynamic team. This internship provides an opportunity to gain practical skills and experience required for a career in mine planning.

Job Purpose

The selected intern will familiarize themselves with large-scale open-pit mining operations, focusing on scheduling and sequencing mining activities, and will be responsible for monitoring compliance with established schedules.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education:

    • Grade 12/Matric Certificate.
    • Diploma/Degree in Mining Engineering from an accredited institution.

  • Experience:

    • Open Pit experience is advantageous.
    • Must be registered or eligible for registration with a recognized professional association.

  • Other:

    • Demonstrated ability to meet the technical and responsibility requirements of a Mining Engineer.
    • Valid driver’s license (Code 08).
    • Certificate of fitness to work in a mining environment.

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to effectively work in a team environment.
  • Proficiency in report writing.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Planning and Scheduling:

    • Schedule mining blocks and draft the short-term mine plan.
    • Work to ensure that planning aligns with financial viability alongside the mining business partner.
    • Ensure plans encompass all aspects of the mine’s value chain.

  • Production Coordination:

    • Manage and coordinate with the mining business partner to meet production targets on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis.
    • Assist with blasting activities to optimize results.

  • Availability and Execution:

    • Be available for weekend work to maintain compliance with short-term plans and priorities within the mine’s value chain.
    • Collaborate closely with all business partners to align them with the mine plan for effective execution.

  • Reporting:

    • Prepare and issue monthly and weekly mine plans (ultra-short to short term).
    • Develop production schedules that include all supporting functions (e.g., drilling, blasting, and road maintenance) to ensure consistent product availability.
    • Ensure production schedules correspond with maintenance work schedules.
    • Create production forecasts and operating budget estimates.

  • Additional Duties:

    • Perform any additional delegated ad hoc duties as instructed by the Supervisor.
