Job Summary:
Bidvest Tank Terminals is looking for a knowledgeable and proactive Safety Officer to join our SHEP Department in Richards Bay.
The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering efficient HSE support and ensuring compliance with company standards and legislative requirements related to health, safety, and environmental practices.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Strong organizational and multitasking capabilities.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work under pressure.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Understanding of Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) and fire systems.
- Familiarity with SHEQ systems, including ISO 45001, ISO 14001, and ISO 9001.
Minimum Requirements:
- Grade 12
- SAMTRAC certification
- National Diploma in Safety Management
- Relevant certification in Fire Prevention
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar role, preferably in the Chemical or Petrochemical industry.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct daily audits and inspections of contractors.
- Ensure Safety, Risk, and PPE assessments are performed as necessary.
- Inspect firefighting and suppression equipment for compliance.
- Direct and participate in PIMAD (fire evacuation drills).
- Develop strategies for mitigating fire risks.
- Compile and maintain a register of safety and emergency equipment.
- Monitor contractor safety performance, compiling relevant reports.
- Participate in the selection, training, and motivation of fire team members.
- Assist in incident investigations and report on causative factors of incidents.
- Conduct daily site visits and ensure immediate correction of non-conformances.
- Ensure adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSACT) by all employees and contractors.
- Conduct weekly SHE stand-downs.
- Supervise Safety Watchers and guide Safety Representatives in their duties and reporting.
