Calling all finance and economics students! Entries are open for the 53rd Nedbank & Old Mutual Budget Speech competition with1st Prize R150 000.

53rd Competition entries close on 31 July 2024.

In line with our joint commitment to the role corporates must play in developing young talent to take the nation forward, Nedbank and Old Mutual aim to harness the thoughts and opinions of students from a diversity of backgrounds and countries. Entrants are encouraged to be bold, innovative and meticulous in their research.

Competition Objectives

To grow economic excellence in South Africa by:

  • Promoting the principles of sustainable economic development.
  • Developing future leaders in the field of economics, with a focus on young black university students.
  • Making young South Africans excited about economics as a subject and career path.
  • Providing the students with an opportunity to establish contact with key players in the facial world.
  • Making the competition part of the National Budget institution.

2024 Prizes

Because the possibility exists that the fruit of this competition could be an idea or innovation that could change the course of South African economic history, we offer generous cash prizes.

Postgraduate Category

  • 1st Prize: R150 000
  • 2nd Prize: R100 000
  • 3rd Prize: R50 000

Undergraduate Category

  • 1st Prize: R60 000
  • 2nd Prize: R40 000
  • 3rd Prize: R20 000

Undergraduate

Discuss the impact of public debt on government finances in developing economies, focusing on South Africa.

Postgraduate

What are the prospects for medium-term economic growth in South Africa against the background of the possibility of coalition government on a national government level.

How to Enter

Entries not conforming to the rules of the competition and the format requirements will be disqualified without being read.
