South African Radio Astronomy Observatory: Undergraduate Scholarships 2025

SARAO UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS OVERVIEW

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) invites applications for the Undergraduate Scholarships 2025.

Closing date: 31 August 2024

NOTE: Individual universities will set their own internal closing dates for applications. Please find out from the university where you intend registering for your undergraduate degree, what their internal closing date is, and ensure you submit your application by that date.

ELIGIBILITY FOR SARAO UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS

SARAO will consider applications from South African citizens and permanent residents who achieved a minimum of 70% in Mathematics in Grade 12, or a minimum grade-point average of 65% at undergraduate level, and who are studying/plan to study, any of the following degrees:

  • Bachelor of Electronic Engineering
  • Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering
  • Bachelor of Mechatronic Engineering
  • Bachelor of Computer Engineering
  • Bachelor of Science in Mathematics / Applied Mathematics and Physics
  • Bachelor of Science in Physics and Electronics
  • Bachelor of Science in Astronomy / Astrophysics and Physics
  • Bachelor of Computer Science, with co-major in Mathematics / Applied Mathematics
  • Bachelor of Science in Physics and Electronics / Astrophysics / Computer Science

FUNDING LEVELS FOR SARAO UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS

The 2025 undergraduate scholarship level is R173 040. In addition to the scholarship, students are eligible for a once-off laptop grant of R12 000.

For Bachelor of Engineering degrees, the duration of a SARAO undergraduate scholarship is one year for fourth-year students, two years for third-year students, three years for second-year students and four years for first-year students.

For Bachelor of Science degrees, the duration of a SARAO undergraduate scholarship is one year for third-year students, two years for second-year students, and three years for first-year students.

HOW TO APPLY

Applications must be submitted electronically on the NRF Connect: https://nrfconnect.nrf.ac.za, as per
the university internal closing date.

A student may only submit one application. Applicants MUST upload/attach the following documents to their applications:

  1. A motivation of no more than 1000 words, describing your academic achievements, why you chose to study the degree you have selected, your research and career aspirations, as well as why you think you deserve to be awarded a SARAO Undergraduate Scholarship.
  2. Two letters of reference, at least one of which must be from an academic (teacher/lecturer).
  3. A copy of all your matric and/or university academic results.

No late or incomplete applications will be accepted.

Successful applicants will be notified by 10 December 2024. If you have not heard from SARAO by 10 December 2024, please assume that your application was NOT successful.

SARAO reserves the right not to accept any application in part or in whole. The decision of SARAO will
be final and no correspondence will be entered into after the decision.
