About the Old Mutual 2024 Hackathon

The 2024 in-person Hackathon runs from 14 to 16 August 2024. Please submit your application by 28 June 2024 and be one of the students to participate in this awesome event.

Minimum requirements

What are the minimum requirements?

  • Final year students studying towards an IT, Digital & Data Analytics related qualification at a South African university.
  • Recently graduated and current graduates with an IT, Digital & Data Analytics related qualification from a South African university.

Hardware Requirements:

  • Laptop and charger
  • Computer peripheral (e.g., mouse, keyboard, external monitor – optional)
  • Reliable internet connectivity will be provided by Old Mutual via their wi-fi
  • Hackathon participants need to be available for the full in person Hackathon period i.e. 09:00 SAST on 14 August to 18:00 SAST on 16 August 2024.

The Hackathon Process

Applications for the Hackathon must be submitted by 28 June 2024. The selection process will consist of four rounds:

  • Round 1: All applications will undergo a screening process.
  • Round 2: Successful candidates will be required to complete two online assesments.
  • Round 3: Successful candidates from round two will be invited for a pre-screening interview.
  • Round 4: Successful candidates from round three will be invited to participate in the Assessment Centres to take place in the following locations: Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. This will be the last step in the screening process.

A final selection of the 30 Hackathon participants will be notified via email and invited to attend the compulsory Pre-Hackathon Preparation event on 05 August 2024 from 09:00 – 15:00.

The selected 30 participants will get a chance to participate in an immersive experience solving real challenges through technology for Old Mutual from 14 -16 August 2024 and would need to be available for all three days (72 hours).

The 30 participants will be split into six teams of five members each for the duration of the Hackathon. All six teams will get an opportunity to present their ideas to a judging panel on 16 August 2024.

The panel of judges will evaluate the presented ideas based on a predetermined criteria, and subsequently announce the winning team. Members of the winning team will equally share the cash prize of R 100 000.

The overall cash prize is R100 000, which will be split equally among the winning team members/group which will be made of 5 members per team.

Participants of the Hackathon could also stand a chance to be employed at Old Mutual. This is subject to our recruitment policies.

By agreeing to participate in the hackathon you also agree to be considered for the Old Mutual Graduate Programme 2024.
