Job Purpose

To conduct all activities associated with security control room operations which include the monitoring and administration of the CCTV system installed as well as conduct general security administration to ensure compliance with the maritime transport security requirements as contemplated in the International Ship and Port facility Security (ISPS) Code.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provision of a safe and secure port environment in compliance with the ISPS code
  • Minimization of security risk
  • Promotion of TPT security
  • Changing nature of crime (organised crime)
  • Monitoring Illegal immigrants, stowaways, strikes/social unrest and crowd control – via surveillance systems

  • Compliance with all Maritime Transport Security initiatives.
  • Maximum utilization of resources (equipment)
  • To remain abreast of the technological environment with regards to electronic release systems, new cargo systems, electronic security access systems and digital security surveillance and response systems.
  • System failure (contingency planning).

  • Deals with local and international public (seafarers) on a daily basis – interpret foreign languages (sign language/actions).
  • Detection of trespassers and stowaways via surveillance cameras
  • Mastering the functionality of the system.
  • Understanding the systems standing operating procedures.
  • Lack of support from other security Stakeholders.

  • Complete understanding of the security environment.
  • Distraction of focus as a result of multiplicity of events and/or incidents.
  • Internal sabotage of security systems.
  • Non-compliance to security standing orders.Page 3
  • Lack of standardised specialised training with regard to security systems.
  • Inadequate security measures.

Qualifications and Experience

Years of Experience with a formal qualification:

2 years relevant experience in Port Operations/Maritime Services/Warehouse Tally Clerk Security Official (PSIRA) Course – Grade C (3 weeks), Code 8 Drivers License, Computer literacy – including MS suite of programs and CCTV systems software, Electronic Security Systems Operators Training (one week)

OR Typical Qualifications: • Grade 10 NQF 2, Clerk Security Official (PSIRA) Course – Grade C (3 weeks), Code 8 Drivers License, Computer literacy – including MS suite of programs and CCTV systems software, Electronic Security Systems Operators Training (one week)

OR Number of years with certificates or no formal qualification: • 3 years relevant experience relevant to the position applied for

Skills and Competencies

Knowledge of security guarding philosophy • Knowledge of TPT business processes, policies, procedures and standards • Knowledge of Customs, Immigration and Ports of Entry Police Procedures. • Knowledge of investigation procedures and methods.

Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation and procedures. • Knowledge of port operations • Knowledge of Hazardous substances, IMCO labels and response procedures. • Knowledge of the ISPS Code • Knowledge of Law of Security Officers (Criminal Procedures Act)

Detail Knowledge of all security procedures. • Knowledge of cargo flow and documentation • Knowledge of harbour regulations • Knowledge of security systems technology • Fire Fighting knowledge

Knowledge of basic first aid • Organising skills • Computer literacy • Decisiveness • Communication and team building skills • Interpersonal Understanding • Change management understanding
