About the Fellowship

The Wits Innovation Centre invites applications for this prestigious fellowship which will advance interdisciplinary research innovation at the University of the Witwatersrand, one of the leading research universities in Africa.

Applications can be made for a Postdoctoral Fellowship of ONE YEAR, renewable on an annual basis up to three years. The value of the Fellowship package is R321 560 per annum, which includes relocation costs,
medical aid, and research expenses.

We encourage applications by practicing artists with a PhD in any creative discipline who wish to engage in high level long term interdisciplinary artistic research in the Johannesburg Lightning Research
Laboratory in the School of Electrical and Information Engineering.

Background information

The Johannesburg Lightning Research Laboratory, situated in the School of Electrical and Information Engineering at the University of Witwatersrand (Wits), Johannesburg, is dedicated to advancing our understanding of lightning.

With a team of experts in various fields, including lightning physics, detection, protection, and human safety, the group aims to harness Johannesburg’s high flash density, averaging 15 to 20 flashes per square kilometer per year.

The laboratory’s main research areas encompass High-Speed Lightning Studies, Lightning Detection and Measurement, and Lightning Safety and Awareness, all contributing to improving lightning protection systems and ensuring human safety.

Project proposal Outline

  1. Briefly describe your concept and the background to your idea. Please mention why you wish to work in the Johannesburg Lightning Lab and what you hope to gain from this experience. Approx. 750 words.
  2. Describe how this proposal is an extension of any previous work, your background or research, and how this opportunity might be of value to your art work in the future. Approx. 300 words.
  3. Describe your interest in the potential to collaborate with scientiststechnologists. App. 200 words.
  4. Briefly describe how your proposed research project will advance artistic research
    and innovation in South Africa / Africa. Approx. 200 words.
