About AU Digital and Innovation Fellowship

The African Union Digital and Innovation Fellowship Program is a comprehensive year-long initiative designed to select and place skilled tech innovators from Africa in various units and departments at the African Union headquarters as ‘resident fellows’.

Their main goal is to familiarize themselves with the operations of these units, pinpoint data management issues, and address them by collaborating on and developing customized innovative solutions that enhance data management procedures and enhance the overall efficiency of the AU.

Additionally, they aim to ensure the longevity of these solutions beyond the fellowship period by enhancing the internal capabilities of AU staff in these units.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Reside in Africa and be a citizen of an African Union member state;
  • Be younger than 34 years old at the time of applying;
  • Possess a tertiary education degree or its equivalent;
  • Demonstrate the ability to collect detailed information on complex issues and effectively evaluate and analyze data to identify key problems and propose solutions;

  • Have expertise and technical skills in developing innovative technology products/solutions;
  • Be willing to travel for an induction workshop;
  • Be ready and committed to dedicate 12 months.
  • Fellows will need to pause their current commitments and move to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
  • Candidates who are proficient in more than one AU official language (Arabic, English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Swahili) are strongly encouraged to submit their applications.

The African Union Digital and Innovation Fellowship application is open to all eligible applicants and the selection process is completely merit-based.

  1. Stage 1: At the close of the application window, all eligible applications will be assessed by independent reviewers and top scorers will be picked for the next stage of the selection process as finalists.
  2. Stage 2: Finalists will undergo rounds of interviews by the AU departments/organs and the best 16 will be confirmed as fellows. Selected fellows will be mandated to attend the Fellows Induction Workshop and a virtual pre-deployment training before traveling to Addis Ababa and to be deployed to the AU departments/organs.
